Emerging from a long career in publishing, Penny retired to study a DipFA at Northern Beaches TAFE (2004-2008), BVA (Hons) (2009-2011) and Master of Fine Arts (2014), at Sydney College of the Arts, majoring as a ceramic sculptor. As a sculptor, Penny’s work affords her the opportunity to manipulate industrial materials and be inspired by nature to create a presence in the landscape.
She enjoys working with metals, often combined with clay and other found objects. Combining these different mediums offers her the opportunity to form a metaphorical link between human beings and the industry that has invaded our environment.Penny strives to represent the strength of humans (albeit destructive), and the interwoven tangles that form our relationships with each others and with nature.
Like our environment, which can be easily manipulated, destroyed and forgotten, Penny’s work creates an allusion to the memory of what once was majestic, but has gone or is endangered.
